Hey, I hope all is well. I am safe and sound in Prague.

I was unsure about what I wanted to start off with in doing the travel writing for this trip. Here are some things I have noticed about Prague after around 3 and a half days.

Getting here

Mainly because of better timing and to save a bit of money, I took a somewhat longer route to get here.

I flew: LAX to Berlin, waited 5 hours and flew Berlin to Prague.

That was not the most fun 17 hours of travel, but it got me here.

Prices & Money

The Czech Republic uses its own money which can help make everything less expensive.

From 1 to 10, 1 being the least expensive. I give prices in the Czech Republic around a 5. Nothing is completely unreasonable that normal people have access to here. The Czech Republic is less expensive than some places in Scandinavia, but nowhere near as cheap as South-East Asia. The prices are totally bearable but worth mentioning.

Obviously, this will be somewhat generalized. The Czechs that I have interacted with seem.

  • Hardworking
  • Friendly in a reserved way
  • Helpful if you ask
  • They don’t tolerate nonsense
  • Happy when you can even just say a few Czech words
  • Pleasantly surprised that foreigners are interested in their country

I don’t often say this, but the architecture here is really something to marvel at in the old town of Prague. I was surprised at the sheer number of pretty central European style buildings. I am not sure as to how much of the old town is original, but the preservation of this part of Prague is well done.

Czech is quite difficult. I have to say that I am glad that I even learned just the small amount that I did because even having the most basic words and phrases has helped me.

The other languages that I have seen in writing or heard spoken by Czechs are

  • English
  • Slovak
  • German

The level of English here varies person to person. The Czechs that I have interacted with seem to be able to understand the spoken language and have quite a bit of difficulty speaking it. Around 5% of people that I have interacted with here said they speak no English at all. This slight lack of English ability here is why I am happy that I learned some Czech.

This first leg of my trip has been great.
